Week Two

Snowman

A snowman, children playing, smoke curling from the chimney of a nearby cottage…

This picture was engraved on a small piece of boxwood by Thomas Bewick (1753-1828). He lived near Newcastle. Bewick had a wonderfully exciting childhood:

Snowman

"I often, in a morning, set off stark naked across the Fell, where I was joined by some associates, who in a like manner ran about like mad things." Not that, in mid-winter, he would have run about 'stark naked' of course! He taught himself to draw by chalking on the flagstones of the hearth in his family's cottage.

Will you have a chance to make a snowman this Christmas? The weather this year has been rainy rather than snowy. Many people think that this wet weather is a result of global warming. Some would say that humankind has been thoughtlessly taking from God's creation without considering the consequences. If nothing is done snowmen may be a thing of the past.

If you are fed up with the rain and want to find out more about global warming then the USA's Environmental Protection Agency website gives a good child-friendly introduction to the topic.

The University of East Anglia's Climate Change Unit has a much more advanced website. Its 'Information Sheets', including one on climate change, could be useful to secondary students. Clicking on the animated demo link in 'News' gives you an animation of world climate change over the past century.

On the other hand... if you would like to make a snowman on your computer then go to this website.
