MOSES:
THE TEN PLAGUES

Teacher Notes

Appropriate use in the classroom
  • This narrative presents an epic battle between good and evil. This is a theme which pervades life, religions and literature. It is deep in the human psyche. Many children's stories take up this theme so children are very familiar with it in literature as well as real life.

  • The sheer drama of the narrative is amazing. There is a wonderful dramatic build up with the gradual breaking down of the power of evil and the triumph of good as manifest in the final climax of escape from oppression.

  • The Biblical text itself could be adapted to be read dramatically by the pupils. A talented drama teacher could develop the narrative for example, by using a chorus to comment after each plague where the Pharaoh now stands in his battle with God.

  • Apart from the possibilities of presentation, the teacher must explore some of the key issues identified so that pupils gain more understanding of the nature of the text, as well as face up to some of the difficulties it presents.
