Scenarios

Scenario 15

There is a death in the school of a Muslim child. How will you respond?

Clues

  • Before doing anything, discuss the situation with the Head. First ascertain they want your input, then work out together what you will do.
  • Make sure you know something about Muslim beliefs about death and Muslim burial customs. If you have no direct contacts in the faith community, you may find a local hospital chaplain could help.
  • Is there a large Muslim population in the school? How likely are the pupils/young people to know about Muslim traditions - or indeed any religious traditions?
  • If there is a large Muslim population, is there a local Imam or respected Muslim person locally who is used to being in schools? If so, consult them about what is appropriate (but make sure the Head agrees).
  • If you are in a Church school, you could consider instigating or being present at a general memorial service in school, perhaps led by the Head or local Muslim. Make it clear to the Head that you are available to talk with anyone on a one-to-one basis as appropriate.
