Scenario 17
You are invited into the local secondary school to take a question and answer session on Christian attitudes. Most of the questions are unproblematic, but they suddenly start to turn on the subject of sexual morality, including your own. How do you respond?
Clues
- Remember YOU are in charge of the lesson.
- Keep the overall plan of the lesson in mind.
- Whilst you could state your beliefs in general terms, you should also point out that Christians should respect other people and that here is not the place to talk in detail about very personal matters.
- If the student asking the question seems to be genuinely troubled, you should mention this to the Head or designated teacher for Child Protection matters (see Scenario 9).
- TOP TIP: It's always a good teaching technique to answer one question with another (Buddha
was very good at it!). Using this method will disconcert pupils who are interested in causing
a disturbance and cause the thoughtful ones to reflect still further.
Resources
This is a difficult one as there are no specific resources currently available. However, if you think there is likely to be any problem, talk it through with someone you trust beforehand.
