Memories From Students
Micki Rimmer (Mrs Margaret Taylor) 1946–48
My memories include opening the door of our flat in 40, Calais Gate, and being confronted by several ‘Marjons’ (men from St Mark & St John’s College) shouting ‘Quick, which way out?’
We were on the top floor. They dashed out by the fire escape in the nick of time before the very dignified Miss Swinburne, Vice Principal, appeared, saying, ‘Who were those young men? Why were they here?’
‘We don’t know!’
Next day ‘Prinny’ (Dr McKie) called me in for an explanation. I said, ‘We couldn’t have expected them. We were in curlers and Nivea.’ She replied very seriously, ‘Miss Rimmer, there’s no smoke without a little fire.’
Other memories:
- being gated for four weeks after staying out all night sleeping on the pavements in Whitehall to get a good view of Princess Elizabeth’s marriage procession the next day
- dashing up to High Table to grab any food left by the staff
- having a great time with the Dramatic Group always rehearsing at Marjons. Peter Coe, who directed Danny Kay and produced the first Oliver in the West End, was one of my boyfriends there. (I later married a Marjon – Ralph Taylor.)
No memories of work, only of the happiest two years of my life.
