Introduction

Welcome to the St Gabriel's Symposium 'Faith and Citizenship in the 21st Century' which took place at Church House Westminster in 2003. The Symposium aimed to raise issues about the current interest in Citizenship, especially as it relates to religions and to Religious Education in schools. With such a vast subject, it was obviously only possible to skim the surface of those issues, but there is much in these papers to contribute to a wider discussion.

Dr Andrew Chandler was originally to speak on Citizenship but was ill on the day; Dr Chris Sunderland, who wrote the background paper for the conference, ably took his place at short notice and his contribution is here merged with the background paper. We are delighted that Dr Chandler has been able to send us an additional paper to include in this site.

St Gabriel's Policy Planning Group would like to thank all those who contributed and also Colin Alves, Trustee, who edited the papers.

The next Symposium, about the current state of RE, will take place in summer 2005 at Lambeth Palace. For further information, please contact enquiries@culham.ac.uk
